A long-term (up to 24 months) shelter for victims of human trafficking. Victims must be willing to stay at least 6 months. Pathfinder Center is not an emergency short-term shelter. Mission is to provide a place of refuge for victims of human trafficking from all over South Dakota. Safety - Women have stable, safe housing and protection from traffickers. They become part of a healthy, safe community of support that provides compassionate assistance while they address pressing legal, medical and emotional needs. Services and Support - Women receive addiction counseling, job skills/GED classes, emergency counseling and transportation. Services wil also include a crisis hotline, clothing, food and hygiene items. Self Development - Women learn life skills such as communication, conflict resolution, understanding boundaries, understanding trafficking and trauma, and making safe choices to help them live independent lives. Cannot accept anyone who is still using drugs or alcohol. If the victim is still using substances/has addiction issues, they must attend treatment prior to receiving services.

The main focus of Emily's Hope is treatment accessibility, support for families and prevention education. The Emily's Hope Fund, through the Avera McKennan Foundation, is getting people into treatment. Donations help offset insurance co-pays or support the uninsured. Donations will also support the families of those in treatment on a case-by-case basis who are seeing help at the Avera Addiction Care Center. Emily's Hope has developed a K-12 prevention education curriculum that aims to educate children on how substances affect the brain and how substance use disorder occurs. Emily's Hope publishes a weekly podcast on addiction and grief, holds a support group for those who have lost a loved one to overdose/fentanyl poisoning, publishes a blog on grief, and provides the latest news on addiction, overdose and the fentanyl crisis.

Understanding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: For children ages 5 - 11 and their birth, foster, or adoptive parents. While the parents or parenting team is involved in education, supportive discussion and training, the children will gather in a separate group to work on developmental and behavioral issues.

The Juvenile Diversion Program, which includes Teen Court and Truancy Court, is a collaboration between the Pennington County State's Attorney, the 7th Judicial Court, and local social service providers. It is offered as an alternative to court involvement for juvenile offenders ages 10-17. Teen Court is a volunteer youth program, and accepts volunteers 14-17 years old. Charges typically eligible for diversion include: Minor consumption/possession of alcohol Shoplifting Simple assault Disorderly conduct Disturbance in school Truancy Possession of tobacco, marijuana, or drug paraphernalia The following are some of the classes and other activities that may be required during the three-month program. Participants are responsible for all program costs. Scholarships may be available for families needing financial assistance.
  • Property Offense and Stop and Think Classes, a two-hour class emphasizing choices and consequences.
  • Community Service, juveniles work as volunteers in the community for a specific number of hours in either diversion-arranged projects or at other sites arranged by the family.
  • M.A.D.D. Victim Impact Panel, juveniles attend a presentation by individuals whose lives have been affected by drinking and driving accidents.
  • Tattoo Removal, juveniles wanting tattoos removed, can be referred to T.R.U.S.T. (Tattoo Removal Unified Support Team).

The Hanson County Sheriff's Office protects the rights of the citizens within its jurisdiction to be free from criminal attacks, to be secure in their possessions and to live in peace. The department is a year-round prescription drug take-back site.
