Bright Start is a community-based, voluntary program which implements the evidence based Nurse Family Partnership model to provide nurse home visitation services to families during pregnancy and may continue until the child's second birthday. ​Services include prenatal, maternal and infant/child health assessments and education; and health, safety and nutrition education. Families are linked with resources such as prenatal, postpartum, and pediatric medical care, family planning services, mental health services, job training, literacy services, employment opportunities, housing, substance abuse treatment, early childhood assessment and intervention opportunities, and other community resources. A mental health therapist is also available to provide individual and family therapy to the clients.

Areas of expertise include anger management, addiction, anxiety, ADHD, Bipolar Disorder, chronic illness, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), depression, grief, military/Veteran's Issues, OCD, PTSD, and Schizophrenia.

Personal Financial Management - Provides counseling and education with budget and savings management. This can be done in a one-to-one financial counseling setting or in a class. In conjunction with the American Center for Credit Education, provides classes such as Credit when Credit is Due, Money In Motion, and Home Buying classes for financial education. Readiness program - Assists military members and their families to prepare and go through deployments, TDY's, and remote tours. The Readiness program offers assistance with pre-deployment counseling, preparing practical aspects of separations, providing support to families, and offering reunion support.

Offering counseling to individuals managing issues from major depression to juggling daily stressors in a supportive, nonjudgmental environment. Offers telehealth services.

Group sessions are available at different times throughout the year. Some of the group sessions offered include: - Corrective Thinking: For youth ages 13 - 18 to help members identify: The five basic thinking errors and deterrents to thinking errors The four characteristics that are essential for change The impact of behaviors on family, friends, and the community - Couples Workshops: For couples who wish to enhance their relationship, whether or not they are having difficulties. Workshops offer: Skill and idea description and demonstration Opportunity for couples to practice skills privately Participants have the opportunity to ask questions and discuss their experiences if they would like - Introduction to Mindfulness: What happens in your life depends on your mind - Social Skills Group: For 10-15 year olds struggling with social skills or fitting in. Understanding Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder: For children ages 5 - 11 and their birth, foster, or adoptive parents. While the parents or parenting team is involved in education, supportive discussion and training, the children will gather in a separate group to work on developmental and behavioral issues. - Mental Health First Aid Trainings: Offered periodically. Participants are taught to assess for risk of suicide or harm; listen non-judgmentally; give reassurance and information; encourage appropriate professional help; and encourage self-help and other support strategies. - Youth Mental Health First Aid Trainings: Offered periodically. Outpatient Services - Individual therapy (for mental health or substance use), Family therapy, Group therapy, Medication management, Psychological assessments and testing, Commitment evaluations, Nursing home consultations, and 24-hour a day crisis intervention via crisis line. Walk in assessments available during regular business hours at the Yankton and Vermillion locations. CARE Club - Program for individuals with a mental health disability (i.e. schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, anxiety and borderline personality) who live in the community. CARE club provides support, assistance, interaction with others and the opportunity to improve consumers existing skills and develop new coping skills. Children's Services - Provides child centered therapeutic services in the home or office. This program provides mental health services to children with Serious Emotional Disturbance (SED). The parents, families, and surrogate families of children with SED participate in all aspects of evaluation, planning and delivery of services. Works closely with child-serving agencies and programs.
